I’d never pick Elijah Wood out of a line-up of Hollywood hopefuls to play the sort of American that would fall in love and in step with a proper english football firm like West Ham’s Green Street Elite – but, credit where it’s due, Wood does the job well.

OSA Lightning Safety
July 15th, 2010
It has definitely been one of those peculiar summers in Ontario. Nature has given us sporadic bursts of warm sunny weather, but we have seen more and more extreme thunderstorms and wet soggy days. In the world of soccer these conditions are not ideal and have definitely put a dampener on summer games throughout this outdoor season. Frustration builds when games are started with bright sunshine only to be put on hold or abandoned altogether, while the grey clouds blanket the sky and loud claps of thunder and flashes of lightning move in to force play to cease. Inclement weather, especially in the cases of thunderstorms is a critical issue that needs to be carefully monitored. It is important that not only referees, but all coaches, players, and spectators know about proper lightning precautions as they are exposed to these conditions.
The continuance of the game is at the referee’s discretion. The Ontario Soccer Association has a Weather Policy in place that should be followed in such conditions. The Policy mirrors the ‘30-30 Rule’ as directed by Environment Canada. The ‘30-30’ Rule should be known and understood by all involved in the game. The ‘30-30 Rule’ advises that you take appropriate sheltered if you can count 30 seconds or fewer between thunder and lightning, and to remain sheltered for 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder and flash of lightning (see below).
The Kicks for Cancer Tournament Is Back
July 14th, 2010Kicks for Cancer Is Back!
This tournament was started in 1999 to honour the memory of Aeneas O’Leary. Aeneas was a loving father, husband, and dear friends to many. He, like many others, lost a long battle with cancer. His spirit lives on, and in order to pay tribute to him and all of those afflicted with cancer, we need you to get involved. Every year this tournament successfully brings the community together, across Brampton and the GTA. With over 250 participants and volunteers this event has raised more than $130,000…together we can kick this thing!
There is still room to get your soccer team registered for the 11th Annual Kicks for Cancer. This year’s tournament will be taking place Saturday, August 7th and Sunday, August 8th at Creditview/Sandalwood Park in Brampton. Only $350.00 gets a team of 18 into the tournament – great price! 2010 World Cup – Round of 16 Review
July 1st, 2010And so it finally gets intense and interesting and worthy of our attention…. ahhhh, the World Cup really isn’t much at all until elimination looms is it. So, match by match…
Uruguay 2-1 South Korea: The match that kicked off the Round of 16 was, by all measures, a relatively easy match to pick a winner for. Or so it seemed. It could have been Uruguay’s over-confidence and self-assuredness or perhaps a cautious defensive mentality after they’d gone a goal up, that caused the match to take a sudden turn in South Korea’s favour. Regardless of the reason for it however, Uruguay’s 1-0 lead was quickly pulled back as Korea pressed and drew level. And while many may have felt that this would perhaps change the complexion of the match and sway things in Korea’s favour, Uruguay responded quickly and went ahead 2-1. And so the match ended as such with Uruguay advancing to the Quarter-Finals.2010 World Cup – Round 2 & 3 Review

Sitting here just minutes before the first match of the knock-out phase of the World Cup, the Uruguay/South Korea match that starts off the Round of 16, I anxiously realized that a review was due for the 2nd and 3rd round of matches. This World Cup, while eventful, really has been more focused on some of the off-field chicanery than it has on any real, beautiful, and action packed football.
Few teams have shown up with a true desire to impress and most of them seem readily content to fight out just what they need to advance; by ‘just what they need’, I mean, the bare minimum. It is true however, that some teams haven’t been guilty of this, and perhaps they are the one’s we should focus on.
In the second round of the group phase, one match in particular stands out – the end to end attack-fest that was the Denmark v. Cameroon match which, for me, was one of the highlight spectacles of the tournament. It’s a shame really that both sides are now out, unless you turn your eye to Denmark’s 3rd round match against Japan, where the Danish keeper, Sorensen and Jon dal Thomassen did their best to convince the world the match in round 2 was a fluke.
2010 World Cup – Round 1 Review
June 19th, 2010It’s true, this review is a few days late – but hey, we’re volunteers and don’t get paid and well… …does anyone really read this stuff anyway?
The first round of games in the 2010 World Cup was dull. Defensive, stagnant, pond water murky and void of almost any semblance of excitement. This is how internationals always are though, isn’t it? Or usually are, that may be more accurate.
With the exception of perhaps Japan’s 1:0 victory over Nigeria, Germany’s 4:1 trouncing of a very poor Australian side, North Korea’s valiant first half fight against Brazil and finally, Switzerland’s almost completely unexpected 1:0 defeat of Spain, there was very little worth mentioning from the first round of games.
