Coed Round-Up – Week 1

February 4th, 2010

Coed week 1 has come and gone – and since this round-up is a bit late, week 2 is well under way as well with the Tues/Thurs. results already rolling in.

It’s difficult to suggest surprises this early in a session, or more accurately right at the outset of a session, but Gameday Dreamrz 2-1 victory over United (2 goals from leading scorer Carlon DeCouteau) can be counted as a bit of an anomaly.  Or can it?  In previous session, the teams were either certain to draw or Gameday walked away with the points – except when it mattered most, where United were quick to establish themselves as the team with more nerves and oust Gameday from the Semi-Finals… …eventually winning the title over their opponents the Strikers.  The Strikers on the other hand seemed to take a comfortable 3 points from Porty’s Posse with a 7-2 victory.

Thus far it’s tough to tell or to segment out the interesting bits as the session has just started.  Hopefully in coming weeks, as patterns start to emerge and more matches are attended, there’ll be more colourful commentary on offer.

    Quasimodo meets the Premier League

    January 22nd, 2010

Found a fantastic new joke earlier today that I’m sure all the BAS footie fans that follow the Premier League in England will thoroughly enjoy.

(Need to give credit to ‘The Spoiler.co.uk‘ and their reader Daniel Collins – here’s the link.)

    "Mirror, mirror, on the wall..."

    "Mirror, Mirror, on the wall..."

Quasimodo is in Notre Dame, suffering from self esteem issues.

“I’m ugly!” he shouts at Esmerelda.

Esmerelda does what all good partners do, and attempts to lift Quasi’s dour mood

“You’re not ugly you’re beautiful, darling” she replies.

“Ahh, you’re just saying that,” snorts Quasi, wafting her away with his hand.

“Okay then, why don’t you ask the enchanted mirror that Snow White gave us for Christmas,” says Esmerelda cheerfully, “all you do is say ‘mirror, mirror on the wall who’s the ugliest of them all?’ and see what the mirror says”

“I bet it won’t say you.”

So, Quasimodo goes off into the bedroom to consult this enchanted mirror, only to return five minutes looking a bit puzzled.

“Well?” asks Esmerelda, crossing her fingers behind her back.

    “Who’s Phil Neville?”

    Philip Neville - Twat

Don't know about everyone else, but I actually see a resemblance.

New Puma Uniforms for African Nations and the ACN

    January 17th, 2010

Love the Gazelle (or Ibix) and the hand painted look.

Don’t know if any of you have seen these amazing kits but I am repeatedly enthralled with the amazing style that Puma puts into it’s kit designs.  I’ve not had the pleasure of ever having played a season or even a series of games in kits they’ve designed but I am very curious to know if the quality of the uniforms is anywhere near as good as the actual styling.

If anyone has any experience using Puma kits for a prolonged period, leave your thoughts/opinions in the comments section.

I’ve posted my favourite above, based entirely on style and not on any favouritism concerning the teams.  Feel free to list your favourites below and hopefully, we’ll see a few BAS teams rocking these styles this summer.

    Using Twitter with BramptonSoccer.com

    January 13th, 2010
    BAS On Twitter

Get the most from BAS on Twitter.

BramptonSoccer.com has been on twitter for a while now and it’s actually surprising that so many of you have failed to make good use of it.

At present, BramptonSoccer’s twitter account (located at http://twitter.com/BramptonSoccer ) contains only slight bits of information that may entertain and occasionally inform you of important events.  But this will be changing, in better and ever better ways in the near future.

For instance, in the coming month or so, you can expect all match results to be immediately broadcast via twitter as soon as match officials post the results to the BAS database.  This is an automated feature that will not require any extra effort from any of the parties involved, yet at the same time be of great interest to anyone who’s curious to know the results of other matches in their group, playoff bracket, etc…

Featured Members: Van Sterr FC… Keep It In The Family

    December 30th, 2009
    VanSterr FC

Van Sterr FC; It's a family affair.

In August of 2009 Betty Sterritt and I registered a family-based team for the Fall 2009 Indoor Coed Division of BAS. The team consists of Betty and I, Betty’s daughters Mandy, Laura and Nicole, my son Bryan and daughter Michelle, my brother Tony, Mandy’s spouse Dave Penney, Betty’s cousin Carol Reid, and non-family members Doru Manase, Jason Knapp, Sonia Pannu and Manuel Silva. Even the non-family members have connections to the family, however. Doru’s daughter Cristina and Michelle played together for many years in the Brams United Girls Soccer Club, on a team that I coached. Doru and I have also faced each other on the soccer pitch many times, as we’ve played on different teams in the BAS Master’s division. Jason played indoor soccer with Bryan for a number of seasons in Woodbridge. Manuel and Betty both work in the health care industry and although they work for different companies, they are in regular contact. Laura and Nicole have both worked part-time for Manuel’s company. And finally, Sonia and Betty previously played together for one indoor and one outdoor session.

2009 Boxing Day Bonanza (LIVE BLOG)

    December 26th, 2009
    2009 Boxing Day Bonanza Champions:
    Women’s: Scarborough Azzurri
    Men’s: David House

7:12pm – Congratulations to David House (the team not a person) with the penalty shoot-out win.  Portly Piper put up a fight but House were resolute and maintained form to earn the win.  Well done.  Congrats!

6:52pm – Finally after copious amounts of penalties, and with extra time finishing 4:4, David House win 5:4 in the shoot out.

6:43pm – Extra time has finished with the score still at 4:4.  Portly’s Pipers lost their penalty shooter to two yellow for time wasting and what appeared to be dissent.

6:24pm – Extra Time is set to start as regulation ends 4:4.  West is, regardless of result, a very strong candidate for MVP.

5:59pm – Half Time Score:  David House 2:1 Portly Piper

5:49pm – Technical difficulties in the men’s final – Be back blogging momentarily.

5:34pm – Men’s Final set to kick off in 10 minutes.

5:32pm – Congratulations to Scarborough Azzurri with the late winner.  Coming back from 2:0 down, Scarborough clawed back, levelled with 2 minutes left and scored the winner off a set piece.  Well done.  Congrats!

5:16pm – 2:0 at the half in favour of Vaughan United.  Do Scarborough have it in them to claw back?

4:55pm – Kicking off in 5 minutes, follow the minute-by-minute via twitter @ http://twitter.com/BramptonSoccer – LETS GO GIRLS!4:43pm – Women’s final to kick off at 5pm where Vaughan United are set to face off against Scarborough Azzurri.  Men’s final at 5:45pm with David House squaring off against the Portly Pipers.

4:38pm – David House defeat Polonia, amidst controversy, and despite Polonia clawing back to 2:1 in the final minute only to find that House would score another with 20 seconds to go.  Final score – 3:1 David House.

4:28pm – Africa Unite knocked out (as the 2nd seed) by Portly Piper on a fortuitous penalty take.  Portly advances to the final.

4:11pm – Scarborough Azzurri upset the pre-knockout rankings by ousting Vaughan Azzurri in 1:0 thriller.

3:54pm – Ana Oliveira robs Benchwarmers of a semi birth by tapping in a rebound that had come out off the post.  This was with 3 seconds left and the match was over before she could even celebrate.  Well done, very well done.

3:51pm – If you stayed home today because you thought nothing good was going on, you REALLY missed out on a class match between Vaughan United and the Benchwarmers.  Wow.

3:41pm – Vaughan United’s #16 (Furtado) is running the show as she first draws them level with with header at the far post off an Oliveira shot that was deflected and then puts them ahead with a stunning solo run.

3:34pm – The women’s semis are underway and Benchwarmers have jumped out to an early lead against Vaughan United. Vaughan Azzurri v. Scarborough is yet to kick off due to the shoot out in the men’s match just before it.  Field C is cursed with the poor finishing jinx.

3:33pm – David House meet Polonia on Field C and Africa Unite meet Portly Pipers on D for the men’s semi finals.

3:31pm – Portly Piper advance after the second shoot out of the day with a 3:2 win while going 4 shooters deep.

3:21pm – Polonia advance with a 1:0 win over Superstars FC.

3:18pm – Portly Piper and Heartlake still level at 1:1 with 2 minutes to go.  Polondia lead 1:0.  Follow the play by play (sort of) on twitter at http://twitter.com/BramptonSoccer

3:11pm – Two footed lunge by Portly Pipe’s keeper results in a stopped scoring opportunity and a yellow card.

3:10pm – Polonia lead 1:0, meanwhile on field C Heartlake equalize through Pedro Figueroa.

3:03pm – Portly Pipers take an early lead as they also dominate the start of the match.  1:0

2:56pm – Scarborough Azzurri advance with a 2:1 penalty shoot out result.

2:48pm – Penalties on field C as Mess and Scarborough Azzurri draw 0:0 at the full time buzzer.

2:44pm – Impetus is on Woodbridge to level and they’re taking the initiative with a great deal of pressure.  With all that space at the back though, look to Moreno or Thomas (Vaughan Utd.) to take advantage and add to the lead.

2:32pm – Woodbridges keeper maintains the status quo at 1:0 by keeping Furtado’s strike out.  Anna Oliveira put Vaughan United ahead 3 minutes in with a clever strike.  1:0 Vaughan with 14 minutes to go.

2:25pm – Africa Unite and David House advance to the Men’s Semi’s while Heartlake, Polonia, Superstars & Portly Pipers fight it out in the Men’s Quarters.

2:16pm – Trina Byrne of Muskrat FC asked for a mention, so this is me, giving Trina Bryne of Muskrat FC a mention.

2:15pm – Superstars humble the Renegades 8:0 and Portly Piper edges out a 1:0 win against the Camel erm… ….Ninja Boots.

    2:01pm – Dave Salt is A.N.G.R.Y

1:47pm – Inter Urma fighting for a chance to advance as Erin Mills loses to Heartlake.

12:59pm – Benchwarmers, if they hold out for a few more seconds will top Group D after beating Scarborough Azzurri 3:1.

12:55pm – Vaughan Azzurri top their group by winning 3 out of 3, capping the round robin off with a win over Woodbridge.

12:38pm – Who is this ‘David House’ and why does he keep winning;  if I see Hugh Laurie I’m going to lose it.  (Hugh Laurie = Dr. Greg House)

12:24pm – Inter Urma lose 2:1 to Erin Mills – great match.

12:21pm – Mike Lima (Inter Urma) is doing his best Spider-man impression while preventing Erin Mills from scoring their third.

12:14pm – Inter Urma v. Erin Mills at 1:1 with 10 to go.  Well contested match.

12:08pm – Portly Pipers & Polonia bring out the first 0:0 draw; meanwhile, Polonia Kitchener roll over Renegades.

11:54am – 2 brillaint goals and an own goal have made the Africa Unite v. Heartlake match the most exciting thus far.  Still 4:30 to go.

11:48am – More anecdotal commentary via Twitter – make sure you follow: http://www.twitter.com/BramptonSoccer

11:44am – Ladies United appear to be out of their element as the 5:0 loss to Vaughan United finally gets reported. (Sorry for the delay.)

11:42am – Africa Unite are 2:0 up after 4 minutes and have scored the most disgusting goal of the tournament so far.  Heartlake look frazzled.

11:31 – Vaughan Azzurri thoroughly dimiss Orange Crush with a 5:0 thrashing.

11:20am – Mess win again – 2-1 over Storm FC.

11:16am – Benchwarmers win 1:0 over Muskrat FC who look slated to be making an early exit.

11:09am – UBD lose second match, Woodbridge win 1-0 again.  A clear favourite is appearing in this group.

10:48am – Portly Pipers, deceptive name with a 5-0 win.

10:32am – Heartlake United defending well – looks as though they may hold out for the win.  5 minutes remaining and Inter Urma are pressuring.

10:24am – Heartlake United’s #10 from a clever through ball via Matt Ross, offers up an Henry-esque flick, turn and volley – putting his side ahead 1-0.

10:21am – Next to impossible to get match updates for the games I can’t see (’cause I’m one person covering 3 fields)… …but I’m trying, I’m trying.

10:16am – Just watched the tail end of Africa Unite v. Erin Mills and can honestly say it was the most exciting match of the day – a great kick off to the men’s side of the tournament.  Despite Africa’s exciting efforts to level, Erin Mills walked away with a 2-1 victory.

09:55am – Finally Muskrat FC applying pressure to equalize – may not be enough time left.

09:48am – Mess (aka Burlington) are very comprehensively thrashing Ladies United. It’s 8:0 after 14 minutes and it looks as though more goals are coming.

09:41am – Scarborough Azzurri dominating over Muskrat FC.

09:32am – Benchwarmers receive a 1:0 forfeit victory over Toronto United – shame the tournament has to suffer through that sort of thing.  In the other match, Vaughan United beat Storm FC 4:3 – great attack/poor defending?

09:23am – First match ends with Vaughan Azzurri convincingly dominating to a 2:0 victory.

09:12am – Vaughan put distance between themselves and UBD by going 2:0 up.

09:10am – First goal of the tournament by Vaughan Azzurri’s #10.  Clever pot shot from the top of the box in off the far post.  Keeper didn’t stand a chance.

09:01am -Kicking off in a matter of minutes.  Vaughan Azzurri v. United Black Devils are set to kick off the ladies side of the tournament.

01:36am – Standings and schedules finally online and ready for the big day. Good luck to all participants and we’ll see you out there, on the pitch, in 6.5 hours.

12:06am – First round of matches kick off in 9 hours – visit this page to keep up to date with what’s happening at the tourney or follow Brampton Adult Soccer on Twitter – here’s the link: http://www.twitter.com/BramptonSoccer
