BAS’ Xavier Bhoys vs. RMYC United FC

Brampton Adult SoccerSummer 2013 at the Roy McMurtry Youth Centre (RMYC), a maximum security custody and detention facility for young male youth who have come into conflict with the law, saw the creation of a soccer club, later given the name of RMYC United FC. The club was created in an effort to effect positive change and provide youth with an opportunity to attain self-confidence and leadership skills.

RMYC United FCYouth practiced every Saturday morning and in mid August, once they had an opportunity to create a foundation of camaraderie with each other and develop/enhance upon their skills, RMYC extended invitations to community teams to attend and play against the Club.

The Xavier Bhoys responded to this request and attended the centre on October 5th, 2013 for a game. RMYC United FC pulled out a win, stirring the Xavier Bhoys to request a re-match. On, October 19th, the team returned to the centre with a couple of younger “ringers”. The team tried valiantly in the nail biting game, however the FC were able to defend their title with another win.

The Xavier Bhoys found the experience of playing against youth at RMYC exceptionally positive, with some members commenting on the great skills many of the youth displayed.

The Xavier Bhoys look forward to the 2014 soccer season and the possibility of returning to the centre to again play against their boys.
