High Drama as PTH FC Claim BAS Cup Honours

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

The longest match in BAS history concluded with PTH FC defeating rival GNFC in penalty kicks to claim the 2011 BAS Cup.

The match started on a windy and cold Sunday evening on October 16th.  A technical contest with few chances and several cautions could not be solved in 90 minutes or extra time and ended in a scoreless draw.  The first four kickers from each side scored on their respective penalty kicks.  The fifth kicker for GNFC, Winjendra Ganesharapnam was denied on a clever stop by PTH keeper, Guillermo Ruiz.  The fifth PTH kicker, Johan Vargas strode to the spot with a chance to clinch the victory and first Cup title for PTH FC.  Before he got the chance, however, the automatic flood lights illuminating the field timed out, leaving the pitch in total darkness.

Fast forward one week later to a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Terry Fox Stadium.  Deemed as a simple continuation of the match that started one week prior, the only unfinished business was the penalty kick by Johan Vargas.  With an entire week to think about it, no one could blame Vargas for any anxiety.  Indeed, fearing that he might get injured, PTH brass actually rested Vargas during an indoor contest earlier in the week.

With teams and fans looking on, Vargas calmly struck the ball past GNFC keeper, Vik Brar; a goal made so much sweeter considering all that had transpired.
